New York Times Researchers Handle Fake News with Blockchain Technology

The New York Times Research and Development Team has ambitious plans to disseminate misinformation in online news publishing. This so-called Project Provenance News will take advantage of the irreversible and decentralized quality of the blockchain data storage system to provide extensive metadata on media published with the news.

According to a post from the project’s website, the team aims to create an industrial solution that allows readers and viewers of content to check the authenticity of the media that accompanies online news news quickly. The post stated that there were inconsistencies between the data that the news organization had about the photos and videos they published and information that could be accessed by readers. This is especially true with media shared online.

Usually, when news organizations record videos or take photos, they will record information about when and where the media was captured, and by whom. However, because many of these metadata are lost when content is circulating on the internet, the opportunity to disseminate information that is incorrectly using media content appears on its own. Initially, the project will talk to news platform users in an effort to find which metadata signals and indicators are the most useful and efficient in proving the authenticity of content. This stage is predicted to run until the end of 2019.

Then, the New York Times researchers plan to build a proof-of-concept platform based on the Hyperledger blockchain to fully explore how ledger technology distributed can help restore user confidence in the news industry: “We created a system for storing and sharing contextual metadata about photos using Hyperledger Fabric, an open-source, permitted, blockchain framework.”

The New York Times platform will be accessible to all. Following these phases, a working group is planned to help advance future experiments with blockchain technology. The ultimate goal is the arrival of a suitable platform that can be accessed by all media platforms.

The ambitious project of the New York Times Research and Development team is just one of the many ways blockchain technology has rocked the industry around the world. Why Should Education Be Free For Everyone?

Hi folks, hope we all are having a good time here.

I just wonder if the education system across all countries is same as mine or we are the only left in this planet. That’s the reason i wrote down a few lines which i think is a major ongoing and never ending issue.

 

Education is the most prominent source of livelihood for the survival of a human being. Through education, knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next. It teaches a person morality, humility, and how to be a loyal, honest, and active citizen of the country.

 

However, there are a lot of people in the world who are not able to receive education. Schooling is the root of education. If proper schooling is not imparted to a person, it is difficult for him/her to get good education. Many children are not able to go to school because of financial difficulties, or because the society is prejudiced on education for girls.Therefore, education should be made free, or it must be made available at a nominal cost.

If we take an example of some hugely populated countries like China and India the responsibility of imparting free and fair education to everyone becomes even more important.However, one may, on the other hand, also point out that free education is hard to provide because there are millions of people who are in need of education. Also, if education is made free for all till the highest level, it may not be practical, especially for professional courses like engineering or medicine. If education is made free, it may become difficult for colleges and universities to bear the cost of such expensive courses.So, “Should education be made free?” The answer is definitely not easy.

Step by step blogging tutorial #Part1

 

This is a tutorial how to make a blog and how to make a living of it, if possible. I already have a blog, which I was trying to maintain, but I wanted to go through all these steps and peculiarities that are recommended in all the best blog making tutorials and courses. I hope they are right, because I want to try it, one more time.


I mean I will not just talk about it how this or that can work, I will actually make a plan and stick to it to see how much I can make of my blog and of myself at the end line by following all these rules.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DESIGN
I like old vintage stuff, so I decided to make my blog a non-responsive flat-line stif, just a way I like it. Now, you can use any modern template or the theme, it is up to you.
It will reflect your personality and give a frame to the things you write about.


CREATE A FEW MUST-HAVE PAGES ( About, Contact, Privacy, Disclosure)
This is a self explanatory. These are all the default pages any blog has.


SET UP GOOGLE ANALYTICS
Or you can use a Statcounter. But Analytics is fairly ok.


JUST START WRITING
For a start – 50 posts about your favorite topic, or in my case the topics.
This can be written by you, or you can outsource it.
Do not use any free articles, nothing is free, you will end up banned or deindexed.


WRITE WITH SEO IN MIND
There are the SEO tutorials online, you can find a very useful things there including a keywords research and keyword density. Apply everything you can, but don’t overdo it.


ADD HIGH-QUALITY PHOTOS TO YOUR POSTS
This means either your own, outsourced or graphics. You can add those too.
If you are in a hurry, use a free royalty images.
Original work will add quality to your work, but if you don’t find it overly important just use something, or if in the last step, when we start doing reviews you will use a free images of the product lines.


POLISH YOUR POSTS
Recommended last things to do:
Interlink your posts – add some related posts on the bottom.
Use “no-follow” links.
Fill out the metadata for your post.
Add your keyword to the alt text of at least one photo.
Set a custom permalink for your post ( if you have this option)


SET UP GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE

SET UP A DOMAIN-BASED EMAIL ACCOUNT ( recomended: zoho)
Well, I had that and it makes one difference, and that is that some things become easier.
In essence i like using Gmail and Aol, but ok.


SET UP A FREE EMAIL NEWSLETTER (mailchimp)
I had it with a Mailchimp as well. If you never used it, take an hour or two and learn how to make it. They have great tutorials and they are really easy to follow.
If you are not comfortable with it, you can use any other service.


SET UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES
Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit… etc etc
This has to be an assignment of a day.
You will have to customise these.
Fill all the necessary fields in the social profiles.
You can also have more than one Facebook fan page about the same thing, or similar.
Later you can merge them.

Don’t forget to instal metadata for your social snippets.
If you don’t have those your post will not show up in the Facebook or Twitter in a way they should.

There are many other social and bookmarking websites where you can share your posts. Come with a list and make them.


SET UP A SOCIAL MEDIA AUTO-SCHEDULER

Recommended tools:

Buffer, Hootsuite, SocialOomph, SproutSocial, TweetDeck ( only Twitter), Facebook ( inbuilt feature), Quintly.

You can absolutely use anything else as long it is comfortable for you.


DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG VIA FACEBOOK GROUPS

Facebook is still extremely popular and there is no reason why not use it.

You can have your own Facebook Group, or you can join other groups and just post there your blog posts. Many Facebook groups allow this. Find the ones that does and who have a huge followers base.


ADVERTISING

The usual way to go is the banner ad units with the Adsense, but if you can’t get it you should try some alternatives.
The Adsense alternatives pay multiple times less than the real thing, so you should avoid these low-carb advertising networks and pay attention to get some solid advertiser to back you up.
If you can’t do that, install – Pubovore, Clicksore, Popcash, Chitika or a-ads.
The last two are the far the worst, and Popcash is a popup based advertising service, but still they are better from the rest.


AFFILIATE MARKETING

Aside from the advertising this can be a very lucrative source of the income.

How to write decent English post for non-native writers

Writing interesting, grammatically correct and stylish English text can be a challenge for a non-native writer. Many Steemians come from the countries where English is not a native language.


So, what can you do to save yourself from the troubling bad writing?

Follow this puppy-short writing course!

Write ( at least) 800 characters in Grammarly, check all mistakes, paste it in Google Drive, correct and save it.

Use Hemingway app and balance your text between 8th to 11th grade.

Paste your work in Paperrater. Set education level to 9th grade and type of paper to the blog/article.

Click Get report and then fix mistakes.

Copy fixed article and paste it on the previous page with same settings but then click printable summary report and follow the suggested improvements.

The report will give you improvements for the first 800 characters. Aim for Grade B.

Listed tools will help you to write basic and decent English text.

It won’t be  for the literary award, but it will be good.

101 Americans Carrying Over $1 Million in Student Loans

It is easy to find a scapegoat, the most obvious is the student. The previous generation’s parents grew up in a world where a college education was a must, so they brought up their kids to believe that they needed a college education to succeed. These kids were duped so the next scapegoat is the parents. They were just following a tried and true rule that was true when they were growing up. Their parents may have been newly arrived immigrants or the immigrant’s kids. They came to America to find a better way of life and they were insistent on educating their families.

With all the scapegoats exonerated, what went wrong. There is not one clear cause as it is different for each individual. One cause which applies to all is the downfall of the economy. When the US government decided to alter financial policy so it was more profitable for manufacturing companies to out source, this was major hit to the country’s GNP. It was the first step in taking the wind out of the economic sails.

The students still pursuing their degrees were remiss in following the economic trends so when they graduated they found no jobs in their field of study. They were left with the option of taking a minimum wage job or furthering their education. It was the path of least resistance to further their education pursuing a MA instead of stopping with a BA. It was easier to keep taking student loans and hoping that the economy will change by the time they got their MA. When it didn’t they pursued their PHD. For the ones that decided to cut their losses and take employment, they were unable to keep up with the payments when their grace period was over. They took a route to refinance the loan, back in the 70’s student loans could be discharged under bankruptcy. If the loan was refinanced, it would no longer be consider a student loan. In the following decade, the initiated rulings that made student loans hard to discharge.

Over this time, college tuition increased at a faster rate. They became more unaffordable but the student’s mindset did not change and they were still working to obtain their degree. In hindsight, they should have taken an economics or finance course so they could grasp what they were getting into.

Today, they are in an financial hole that they can’t get out of. Even if they worked 24 hours, 7 days a week they couldn’t dig themselves out of the debt. They are also being saddled with exploding health care costs, I also grant you that they have an auto loan and a monthly cell phone bill.

The distraction free writing tools which I prefer to use, and which I would advise to anybody are the ones with the dark or dimmed backgrounds.

For this purpose, you can either search the Google yourself or take these two as advisable alternatives to whatever text editor you are using. The white and bright backgrounds, no matter how you adjust your scream resolution, will at the end cause you either a headache or some sort of the discomfort. Plus, the ones I am recommending are quite fun to use.

The first one is ZenPen which has a dark theme, option to set a targeted word count and an option to save your text locally on your PC as a Markdown, HTML or text format. You can use it on the full screen which I rarely do and in a desktop mode. Adding of the basic formatting and links is fairly easy, as you only need to mark the text and you will be served with the options in an option bubble above the line. Using is pretty much straight forward and it doesn’t offer any advanced tools.

Another one is called the Typwrittr and that one is more complex and better looking as well. Users have to make a profile and then they can save their text online. This text editor is also equipped with beautiful backgrounds which we can change as we please, offering us an additional source of the inspiration. Unlike with the ZenPen you can’t set a targeted number of the words, but you can monitor the word count in the bottom of your screen.

I hope these two apps will help you to be more creative and what is more important , more relaxed when you are in your creative mood.

Is there a comprehensive definition of mental disorder available in the literature?

Mental disorder is not easy to define. It is a broad area and there is no single definition in the literature that covers all the situations and medical conditions that characterize a mental disorder. A person can be categorized a having a disorder (physical or mental) on the basis of structural pathology, symptom presentation, deviance from a physiological norm, and etiology.

Different researchers have attempted to define a mental disorder on the basis of concepts such as distress, disability, irritability, inflexibility, irrationality etc. Each of these can indicated a mental disorder, however, a comprehensive definition is still lacking. DSM has attempted to define a mental disorder as:

“ a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in an individual and that is associated with present distress (e.g., a painful symptom) or disability (i.e., impairment in one or more important areas of functioning) or with a significantly increased risk of suffering death, pain, disability, or an important loss of freedom. In addition, this syndrome or pattern must not be merely an expectable and culturally sanctioned response to a particular event, for example, the death of a loved one. Whatever its original cause, it must currently be considered a manifestation of a behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunction in the individual. Neither deviant behavior (e.g., political, religious, or sexual) nor conflicts that are primarily between the individual and society are mental disorders unless the deviance or conflict is a symptom of a dysfunction in the individual”.

So I think any condition that hinders a person from doing their day-to-day duties can be classified as mental disorder, such as depression, where a person loses all his motivation to live fully.

Does smoking cause depression?

 

Hi everyone,

In this post, I will share with you my research findings about the association of smoking with depression and anxiety disorders. I conducted this research during my PhD and tested ~ 3000 participants in the Netherlands.

Previous research has indicated a strong association of smoking with mental illness, especially depression and anxiety disorders, and a two-way association has been found, that is, (i) people who feel depressed/ anxious normally start smoking in order to alleviate their depressed feelings, and (ii) people who start smoking subsequently develop depression and anxiety disorders.

In my research, I selected those participants (age 18-65 years) who were not depressed / anxious when they started smoking. I split the participants in 2 groups, (i) early onset smokers, those who started smoking BEFORE the age of 15 years, and (ii) late onset smokers, those who started smoking AFTER the age of 15 years.It was found that for the early-onset smokers, it took less time to develop a mental illness as compared to the late onset smokers.

I think, the reason of this association might be that the young brain is still under development and may be more likely to be affected with nicotine.

Mindfulness meditation and pregnancy

In some pregnant women, pregnancy hormones badly affect mood. In one study, the effect of mindfulness meditation was observed in pregnant women who were suffering from major depression, and it was found that depressive symptoms were significantly reduced in women who underwent mindfulness meditation training for 10 weeks. The mothers-to-be also showed more intense bonding to their babies in the womb.

In a study conducted at five middle schools in Belgium, involving about 400 students (13 ~ 20 years old), Professor Filip Raes concludes that “students who follow an in-class mindfulness program report reduced indications of depression, anxiety and stress up to six months later. Moreover, these students were less likely to develop pronounced depression-like symptoms.”
Another study, from the University of California, made with patients with past depression, concluded that mindfulness meditation decreases ruminative thinking and dysfunctional beliefs.
Yet another concludes that mindfulness meditation may be effective to treat depression to a similar degree as antidepressant drug therapy”.

What Is An RSS Feed URL?

 

 

 

In case you don’t know, RSS stands for ‘really simple syndication’, or is also used for “rich site summary”. It is basically a sort of text file that is automatically updated with stripped-down content (for faster loading) whenever you make a new blog post.

How To Create And Optimize Your SteemIt Feed URL?

Don’t worry! It may look like it’s a complicated thing and a lot of work, but in reality it is not.

Below you’ll find a video that will walk you through the process.

  • To create your feed URL, you need a service like FetchRSS.
    A membership is free for the first three URLs you create, but you only need one.

 

  • Once you’ve registered for your free account, sign in. Click on ‘MANUAL RSS BUILDER‘ and enter the URL of your SteemIt blog page into the field.

 

  • You will be asked to identify the contents of your blog page, like for example the title, the description, the image etc.
    (You can see what to do in the video below). The parts you really need to set are News Item, Headline, Summary and Illustration. The link is detected on autopilot.

  • Once you’re done, click ‘Generate RSS‘. You now have your basic feed URL.

 

To spice up this feed URL and add some extra functionalities to it, you can run it through Feedburner.
I know Feedburner is an old-school tool, but I couldn’t find another one that had the same features and was free.

I’m not going to go through the Feedburner process in this post, but I will probably make a separate post about it soon.
You can follow the steps you need to take to set up your Feedburner URL in the video below.

How To Use Your RSS Feed URL?

Like I said before, your RSS feed URL is like a magic tool when it comes to generating traffic.

There are numerous ways to use your RSS feed URL. I’ve listed some below.

(I won’t go deeper into all possibilities today, because I simply don’t have enough time at the moment. I will explain everything in further detail in my future posts.)

 

With your RSS feed URL you can…

  • allow people to subscribe to your SteemIt blog so they will receive a notification when you make a new post.
    (People can subscribe using feed reader services like Feedly or Inoreader. I’ve chosen to use the very old-fashioned Feed Burner to give people multiple subscription options. As you can see, Feedburner also offers subscription by email.)

    I’ve been testing that out using MailChimp, which is free to up to 2000 subscribers. My setup is not perfect yet, but you can already subscribe to receive new updates in your mailbox by clicking the button below.

  • add a widget to your website that is showing your latest posts
  • add an entire page to your blog that automatically updates when you make a new post
  • set up an autoblog and attract more readers
  • send push notifications to subscribers
  • add an auto-updating news box to for example Hubpages
  • submit your feed to RSS directories for more traffic
  • use it for SEO – spread your feed to create backlinks

 

All these features can help you to generate more traffic to your posts. And by getting more views, you increase the chance that people will start following you. And when you have more followers, you usually get more upvotes. And more upvotes… you get the picture, right?

By using a service like IFTTT and Zapier, your options become almost unlimited.

As a music specialist and tutor at a special educational needs school, my role is to teach the students rhythm and drumming techniques that will enable them to get the best use out of their instruments. I am responsible for their development as far as getting them ready to perform in a live performance at the end of the school term, for instance, the Christmas production or a special event in the school calendar.


In order to do this, I must build a strong professional relationship between myself and the students which enable them to feel confident and safe, overcoming the boundaries often faced by teachers in my field is also an important skill to learn as the behavioural, emotional and physical demands can become a real issue if they are not addressed early.


In order to carry out my roles and responsibilities in this position effectively, there are certain professional skills required.

These can be divided into 4 different categories

 Empathetic and engaging

 Approachable and humorous

Teacher as a classroom manager and organiser:

 Good behaviour management

The teaching/training cycle provides a cohesive structure within which roles responsibilities and boundaries can be assessed and reflected upon. The structure of the cycle is very well balanced so the teacher is able to multi-task stages in a constantly developing way. This ensures that the teacher and students reflective growth of role, responsibilities and boundaries remains core to reaching an understanding of the aims and objectives relating to development and the course.

There are different procedures for identifying learning needs. Many times, in trying to identify the needs of students, a Teacher can find their selves going back to student records which contain personal details and learning needs with information on their preferred learning styles. Students’ gender, age, moral, social, cultural and spiritual backgrounds do vary, so are their reasons for the course. This is why as a teacher in my subject area I look at students’ motivation and behaviour closely in order to identify their needs.

From what I have learnt from my subject area and the School where I teach, planning and designing what is to be taught needs careful planning. Designing lesson objectives, creating different teaching methods and using media based tools really help the students with the overall learning experience which is in line with the organisation and evaluative procedures.

The stage of delivery for me as a special needs music teacher is vital. This is where, after all the planning and design is done, I have to deliver the content of the lesson to students successfully, as any failure here means the whole process is in jeopardy, which can ultimately cause behaviour issues.

Assessing students in my subject has to do with how well students have learnt a particular bespoke set of skills. My satisfaction therefore would be if my students have learnt what I intended them to learn during my teaching session. I assess this by asking them questions on the topic taught, giving out fun quizzes and encouraging them to make contributions in a group discussion. In doing this, one has to make sure that there are boundaries. Testing should be fair for all students, it should reflect capabilities as regards differentiation (if possible, a dyslexic student whose writing in scruffy and hard to understand should be given a laptop to use word to process his thoughts), testing should not be used to discriminate between and among students. Assessment should also be valid to the subject.

Evaluation of the teaching and learning process is successful when I record students’ progress, behaviour and performance with informal and formal assessment results, paying attention to the learning methods which most enhances students’ learning in order to adjust my present and future lesson plans for my subjects if need be.

To summarise all of the above factors would be to say that these roles, responsibilities and boundaries assist teachers in delivering and enabling learning not only as a teacher teaching, but as a classroom manager and organiser and when monitoring student progress and potential. The personal qualities and skills acquired with the use of a model such as the Teacher Training Cycle enables continuous improvement in their procedures through assessment and reflection, this also allows the teacher to overcome possible boundaries they may face; this in essence ensures that the learner has a positive learning experience which aids the development of knowledge and understanding in their chosen subject area.

Got Hacked On SteemIt? Here’s How To Get Your Account And Reputation Score Back!

This step-by-step guide will show you how to recover your account and your reputation after getting hacked.

It Can Happen To Everyone

If you’ve been following my blog, you probably know I got hacked last week. If you haven’t read my post/ warning yet, please head over to: ‘The Most Important Thing I’ve Learned From Getting HACKED!!.

Unfortunately, the phishing scam is still going on, and people are still falling victim to the hackers.

What’s Going On?

In case you haven’t heard the news yet: hackers are compromising accounts by sending out phishing messages with a fake link.

The phishing messages take many forms.

When you click the link inside, you’re taken to a fake website (like for example steemil.com or steewitt.com) which resembles SteemIt.

You’re then asked to log into your account. Once you do, the hackers have access to your credentials.

Once the hackers can access your account, they use it to send out their phishing message to others, trying to get more people to click their fake link.

When you’ve exposed just your private posting key, that’s all they can do and your money is safe. However, if you’ve exposed your private active key – or even worse: your master password – the hackers will withdraw your SBD and initiate the power down of your SP.

Protection Measures

Once the phishing comments that were sent out from your account are detected, the people over at @steemcleaners will start flagging them. When a comment has been flagged, it is hidden from the public. This way, the risk for others to click one of the phishing links is reduced to almost zero.

Don’t Go Around Blaming People

I’ve seen several posts in which people are pointing their finger at the owner of the account that was used to post the phishing message.

Please don’t do this. The account has been hacked, just like yours. It’s the hackers that are sending out the phishing messages. The only thing you can blame the owner of is of being stupid enough to get his account hacked. By blaming the owner, you’re increasing the damage that has already been done.

What To Do When Your Account Has Been Hacked

I’ve noticed quite some people have abandoned their hacked account and created a new one, or still have their reputation score at -1.

As you can see, I recovered my account and got my reputation score back up, so it is possible to get out of this with just little damage.

Below, you can find the steps to take to get everything back to normal.

1. Start the account recovery process.

How to do this depends on how you’ve created your SteemIt account.

  • If you’ve created your account through the SteemIt website itself, you need to initiate the account recovery process by clicking the ‘Stolen Accounts Recovery’ link in the menu you can open by clicking the menu item at the top right of your screen.

    You’ll have to enter your account name and your password before you can click the ‘Begin Recovery’ button. Then, you’ll have to enter the email address associated with your SteemIt account. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have to be patient, because it can take up to 24 hours for the confirmation email to arrive.
    Once you’ve received it, simply follow the instructions given.

  • If you’ve created your account through Blocktrades, you’ll need to send an email to the Blocktrades support service. Someone from @blocktrades will then contact you. You’ll be asked to confirm your Blocktrades email address and you’ll need to send your password. They will then start the recovery process.
  • In case your account has been created through AnonSteem, you’ll have to follow the guidelines for their ‘Stolen Account Recovery’ process, which have been outlined here.

2. Editing the comments

Once you are back in control of your account, you need to make sure the flags will be removed. @steemcleaners will do this for you, providing you edit every single phishing comment that has been posted from your account so it will become harmless.

This will take some work and time, but if it can help you to get your reputation score back up, it’s definitely worth it.

DO NOT DELETE THE PHISHING COMMENTS!!

To get started, go to https://steemworld.org/@yourusername.
(Change ‘yourusername’ to your actual username)

Scroll down to ‘account operations’ and find the spam comments that have been posted from your account.

UPDATE:

There now is a script available that allows you to mass-edit comments. CLICK HERE to read the update.

From here, you should be able to edit the comment. Replace the existing text with ‘comment deleted’

You should do this for EVERY SINGLE PHISHING COMMENT.
(I told you it would take some work…)

3. Get the flags removed

Once you’ve edited all comments, visit the Steemcleaners Discord channel and tell them you’ve edited all the comments.

Be patient, it can take a while before someone is available to help you out.

Someone from @steemcleaners will then remove the flags so you can get back your reputation score.

If you’ve received flags from others, contact these people, explain the situation, tell them the comment has been edited to make it harmless and ask them to take away the flag.

That should do it.

When your account and reputation score are back up, you can decide whether or not you send all the people who got commented on a short comment with your apologies.

giphy (7).gifThis may sound like another truckload of work, but by doing this you can clear your name entirely. I do recommend it, but it’s totally up to you.

How To Prevent This From Happening Again

It’s a shame it took such a drastic event for me to learn a couple of important things concerning account security.

First of all:

Never use your master password for daily logins.

Always triple-check the URL to see that you’re actually on SteemIt before you enter your credentials.
