As much as scoring an own goal can be a nightmare to the individual player, it is also believed to have a negative impact on the overall performance of the team in such a game.
My happy moanday journey this week takes us into Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United State of America, where a team which is struggling to put a goal past her opponent, but yet easily put 2 into her own net.
4 games into the season prior to matchday 5, Colorado Rapids sits in the rear end of the Western Conference table, with a winless streak of 3 draws and a loss, and were expected to give a better fight against the high-flying Houston Dynamo which has only dropped 2 points out of her expected 9 having played a game less, and sits in 4th position.
With all the finesse Houston Dynamo is showing in front of the opposition goal where they have scored 6 goals in their 3 matches, their defence leaves few to be admired, conceding 4 in the same number of matches, so, Colorado Rapids were expected to at least trouble Dynamo’s defence, but like in their previous 4 league matches, Rapids problem is not just scoring goals, but also, defending, and their poor showing was also on display again at home ground, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, against Dynamo.
here is the highlight;
Stats show that Rapids had more shots on the day, 20 shots compared to Dynamo’s 10, out of which only 5( or 7 if the own goals could be counted) was on target, they had more possession, corners, yet, they just could find a way past their lucky opponent. When they finally got their goals, it was in the wrong end of the field, poor lads.
Colorado Rapids tormentor in chief came in the shape of Alberth Elis, the Honduras and Dynamo wide man ran the Rapids’ defence ragged, forcing the 2 own goals off Radips’ players, assisting another to a teammate, Memo Rodriquez and notching a goal for himself, former EPL and Everton goalkeeper, Tim Howard could only look on, a man of the match performance by Elis.
It is now 5 winless run of games for the Rapids, 2 losses and 3 draws, 4th from bottom on the log table with just 2 points. Fortunately, it is just 5 games into the season for Colorado Rapids, and there is still plenty of games to play and to turn around their fortune if they are to make the playoffs.
Some will argue that scoring 2 own goals in a single match is just bad luck, maybe, Dr T.P.Chia says;
bad luck is a test of resilience, determination and perseverance. Many people fail to withstand the pressures of bad luck and simply give up.
I think Rapids have to do more if results are to go their way, the old saying still works;
heaven helps those who help themselves – Benjamin Franklin.
A really moanday for Rapids’ Axel Sjoberg and Keegan Rosenberry who scored both own goals respectively, I sure hope you guys recover on time and better luck in the next match.
